2021 Tournament, June 4th - 5th
Old Edwards Club and GlenCove
Cashiers, NC
The 2021 Al Invitational took place on a calm, early Summer weekend in Cashiers, NC. Moving back to a full field event after the Covid delay, this year's edition saw the inaugural playing of the Al Cup. For the first time in memory, there was no rain during the Al. Former UGA hooper Brad Brizendine showed his raw athleticism, taking a commanding day one lead from the One tees. While his Father-in-law, Mark Demoss made a strong showing, Brad toyed with him on day two--shooting 5 strokes worse from an easier tee box, but still powering his way to a definitive wire-to wire win.
After a pre-tournament redraft between captains Al and Arthur Williams, the Al Cup was destined to be a heated competition. Day one saw a tie through Fourball play, and some wonderful captain's picks led Team Al to sleep on the lead after Foursomes at GlenCove. Singles play was led early by Team Al, who clinched the Cup with multiple teams still on the course.
Perhaps the weekend highlight was a putting competition showdown between Hugh Williamson IV and Wade Schueneman after the Champions dinner. Schueneman was unconscious, managing to make no less than 4 thirty foot putts to close Hugh out. One other notable mention was the first hole in one in Al Tournament history by Sam McElreath on Hole 4 with an 8 iron.
